iPhone 4S welcomed by AT&T activation delays, iCloud stumbles out of the gate

If you've unboxed a shiny new iPhone 4S from AT&T today, you've most likely had an experience similar to many others who made the same purchase: frustration. It seems that the surge in activity from the release of Apple's new handset has reduced activation traffic on Ma Bell's network to a crawl. This isn't the first time the carrier has had issues on launch day -- but back then, it didn't have any competition. Now that Verizon and Sprint have joined the iPhone party, the pressure's on and AT&T's not looking good compared to the other carriers who don't appear to be having issues. As if that weren't enough for the folks in Cupertino, iCloud had a rocky debut this week as well -- from absent verification emails to an inability to backup data. Apple has documented all five of the new service's foibles via the coverage link below, but it appears everything's been peachy since early this morning. So, have you been waiting for your new iPhone to be more than a shiny new paperweight? Leave a comment, and let us know.

Childress laments Bowyer?s exit

Team owner Richard Childress says he regrets that Clint Bowyer is leaving his outfit and all but confirmed that financial reasons caused their split. Bowyer announced last week that he will join Michael Waltrip Racing for the next three years after agreeing a deal with the Toyota outfit and sponsor 5-Hour Energy. When speaking about his deal Bowyer said he tried to get his sponsor to be part of a new deal with that had been in the works with RCR for months, but that negotiations hit a stumbling block.

AT&T's LTE Plans, In Which "4G" Remains a Vague Cipher [At&t]

God bless Sascha Segan, who may be the most dogged reporter on carriers and networks around. In this episode, AT&T tells him its LTE plans. Some of its answers will make you punch a wall, because they are non-answers, like whether their LTE phones will work on Verizon's network. But a couple things remain of note. More »

Microsoft reportedly preparing Silverlight-like app framework ahead of Xbox Live update

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced a new slate of Xbox Live partnerships with Verizon, Comcast, and a host of other content providers. Now, the company has unveiled new details about the code upon which these new apps will run. Sources close to the situation tell GigaOM that the new framework, code-named "Lakeview," will be based on Silverlight, but will also bring a few new features from Xbox Kinect, including voice recognition and gesture-based controls. More intriguing, perhaps, are insider claims that Microsoft's new content partners stream video using Apple's HTTP Live Streaming, rather than Redmond's Smooth Streaming. GigaOM's sources went on to say that Microsoft has been introducing major changes to the platform over the past few weeks, in the hopes of having it ready for third-party developers once the Xbox Live update rolls out. Spokespersons for Xbox and Silverlight said they have "nothing to announce" about the new framework, though GigaOM reports that Redmond is aiming to release the update on Black Friday.

IR Jammer: TV-B-Gone-B-Gone

The most famous TV-B-Gone prank must surely be the one executed by Gizmodo at 2008’s CES. When MAKE magazine gave a bunch of gadget bloggers a widget that would cycle through IR codes and quickly shut off any TV in the vicinity, it must have known what would happen. The result: much bluster and moral [...]
